ICEBREAKER EXERCISE - GROUP SURVEY
Preparation required : sufficient survey questions for the number of participants
This is an appropriate icebreaker for longer (2 days+) courses as it takes 30 - 40 minutes depending on group size. It works with groups of up to 12 (or larger groups split into teams). It ensures that every participant makes direct contact with every other participant.
Prepare questions such as: "How long have you worked for xxxx organisation" "How far do you travel to work each day" "How many brothers and sisters do you have?" "What was the last CD you bought?" "What would be your ideal holiday destination?" etc. Alternatively, the questions could be linked to the purpose of the training event.
Give the following verbal briefing : "I will give each person a survey question which they should ask every other member of the team. Begin each conversation by reminding the other person of your name, then each should ask the other their question and note down the answer. You only have (x) minutes to complete your survey, so you will need to move quickly around the group. When you have everyone's answer (including your own) prepare a summary of your findings to present to the group."
Allow about three minutes for each paired conversation. Therefore, for a group of 12, allow 30 minutes for the conversations plus 10 minutes for reporting back.
Each participant then presents their findings - briefly - such as "Five of the group have more than 3 siblings, two have 2, four have 1 and three are only children"
