What Might a Facilitator Facilitate?!

Meetings, discussions & interactions

Reviews of:
  • Progress and achievement made against task objectives
  • The process which the group has used
  • The feelings that were experienced
  • Learning that has taken place

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that everyone in the group understands the group's objectives and retains ownership of these and the resulting issues and potential solutions.
  • Support the group to identify a process through which it aims to achieve its objectives.
  • Act as a resource and trainer, willing to share experiences and knowledge of process and problem solving tools.
  • Challenge the group to explore issues fully, question its assumptions and to maximise its potential.
  • Mediate, to support the group to identify, discuss and resolve conflict.
  • Provide process feedback to the group to help in reviewing its effectiveness

Typical Facilitator Activities

  • Agree/contract with the group about their expectations from you as a facilitator.
  • Agree some ground rules.
  • Check that the group understands what it is trying to achieve.
  • Make process interventions at appropriate times.
  • Encourage opportunities for equal involvement and participation from all members.
  • Stimulate discussion and debate on issues
  • Ensure that all views are heard
  • Provide feedback on how the group is working together
  • Check for individual and group commitment to proposals or actions.
