A DEFINITION OF THE ROLE OF A FACILITATOR "To provide unbiased support and guidance to enable a team or group to manage the process through which they will achieve their objectives."
What Might a Facilitator Facilitate?!
- Meetings, discussions & interactions
- Reviews of:
- Progress and achievement made against task objectives
- The process which the group has used
- The feelings that were experienced
- Learning that has taken place
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that everyone in the group understands the group's objectives and retains ownership of these and the resulting issues and potential solutions.
- Support the group to identify a process through which it aims to achieve its objectives.
- Act as a resource and trainer, willing to share experiences and knowledge of process and problem solving tools.
- Challenge the group to explore issues fully, question its assumptions and to maximise its potential.
- Mediate, to support the group to identify, discuss and resolve conflict.
- Provide process feedback to the group to help in reviewing its effectiveness
Typical Facilitator Activities
- Agree/contract with the group about their expectations from you as a facilitator.
- Agree some ground rules.
- Check that the group understands what it is trying to achieve.
- Make process interventions at appropriate times.
- Encourage opportunities for equal involvement and participation from all members.
- Stimulate discussion and debate on issues
- Ensure that all views are heard
- Provide feedback on how the group is working together
- Check for individual and group commitment to proposals or actions.
